Kapap
, which is a Hebrew acronym for krav panim el panim (or face-to-face combat) was originally developed for use by the Israeli military and police. Over the past two years, however, this simple-to-learn system has been offered to civilians around the world. Incorporating several methods of street survival, kapap is widely regarded as one of the top self-defense systems for ordinary people to learn.

Although there are already a handful of kapap instructors teaching in the United Kingdom, the system's popularity has created an urgent demand for more.

The system is governed by the International Kapap Federation in Israel, with instructor certification managed by the United States-based Kapap Academy.

"We have seen a rapid growth in the popularity of kapap internationally over the past couple of years," says Avi Nardia, chief international instructor for the system and former Israeli police and military defensive-tactics trainer. "People of all ages and abilities are now seeking training in kapap, reflecting how simple and effective a system it is to learn. Equally, many police forces and military personnel are benefiting from the training we deliver."

According to Nardia, finding high-caliber people to teach the system has been a challenge, with extensive instructional experience in the martial arts being only part of the requirement.

Potential instructors will undergo a demanding five-day, 50-hour training course at Kapap Academy's European headquarters in Wakefield, Yorkshire. The course, led by Nardia and Kapap Academy President Albert Timen, covers everything from simple striking to gun and knife disarming.

"It's an extremely demanding course," says Timen, who himself has extensive police and military defensive-tactics experience. "We use the course to identify who has the potential to be a kapap instructor, so not everyone will pass. Many people can handle the physical demands we place upon them, but we're also looking for the right personality."
