The National Geographic Channel’s Fight Science answers the question: Do martial artists possess superhuman abilities?

In an upcoming episode focusing on mixed martial arts, scientists use dozens of motion-capture cameras and crash-test tools to analyze the speed, force, range and impact of techniques from some of MMA’s greatest champions, including Randy Couture, Bas Rutten, Tito Ortiz and Dean Lister.

The scientists discover, for instance, that Couture’s punches generate twice as much force as a heavyweight boxer’s most powerful attack, and Rutten’s kicks produce the same force as a 35-mile-per-hour car crash.

Following that episode, Fight Science: Special Ops examines how highly trained soldiers like former Israeli Defense Forces commando Amir Perets and former Navy SEAL Stew Smith perform under extreme conditions.

Both episodes premiere Sunday, Jan. 27, 2008, beginning at 8 p.m. ET/PT.
