Loren W. Christensen’s martial arts training started in 1965. He has 10 black belts: a seventh-dan in karate, a second dan in jujutsu and a first dan in arnis. Christensen began his law-enforcement career in 1967 as a military policeman in the U.S. Army and then joined the Portland (Oregon) Police Bureau in 1972. Before retiring from the PPB in 1997, he served as a defensive-tactics instructor and performed street patrol, gang intelligence, dignitary protection and riot control.

Christensen has written 40 books on a variety of subjects, including two dozen on street-oriented martial arts. He’s also penned dozens of magazine articles, edited a newspaper for seven years, and starred in six instructional videos. He recently co-wrote “The Evolution of Weaponry” with Lt. Col. Dave Grossman for the Encyclopedia of Violence, Peace and Conflict. In 2007, Christensen was accepted into the The Heritage Registry of Who's Who for “his accomplishments in the publishing industry.”
