Black Belt contributor Matthew Lynch started training in shinkendo (Japanese swordsmanship) in June 1999 under the art’s creator, Obata Toshishiro, and is highly ranked in shinkendo. Toshishiro says Lynch's technique is very honest and pure, because he trains only in shinkendo and had no bad habits to unlearn.

Lynch is a senior student and assistant instructor at the International Shinkendo Federation's world headquarters in Los Angeles and teaches full time at one of the federation’s satellite schools, which he opened in March 2003.

He hopes that by writing for Black Belt, he can help bring the samurai spirit to the modern age. For more information on Lynch, visit www.mashuudojo.com.
