Bersilat (to do fighting) is a Malaysian martial art similar to Indonesias pentjak silat. Dating back to the 15th century, this self-defense system displays both a sport and spiritual side. Bersilat schools are split into two branches, silat pulat and silat buah. Silat pulat is a dancelike art that is performed at weddings and festivals. Silat buah is a combat form. Some practitioners of silat buah teach unarmed combat, while others concentrate on weapons use.

Bersilat focuses on leg techniques but also employs punches, judo-like throws and sweeps, and jujutsu holds. Students of bersilat are prohibited from disclosing the arts secrets. Training is passed on from family to family.
